person for him belonging to the estate of Matilda Smoot 
Decd. to the best of his personal knowledge & belief.

Notes from contributor. The following notes are added to 
show the relationships of the various purchasers to the 
deceased. All lived near the Barren Fork River in Warren 
County and these folk were family members, close kin, or 
neighbors. The intent here is to demonstrate the value of
an otherwise unexciting document.

Children of Matilda (Anderson) Smoot (and William Smoot, 
deceased 1879) as appearing at the above sale.

W. H. Smoot (William Henley Smoot).
Sophia Lannon (Sophia Kennedy Smoot), wife of Thomas F. 
Lannom.  
J. M. Smoot (Joseph Murphy Smoot),* husband of Mary Ann 
Stroud.          
Isaac Smoot (Isaac Anderson Smoot). 
Nannie Roach (Nancy P. Smoot), wife of John Eugene Roach.
John C. Smoot (John Calhoun Breckenridge Smoot), later 
(1888) husband of Myra Octavia (Bye) Darnell.

* There was another J. M. Smoot, James Madison Smoot, 
  Matilda's child, who was a minor at the time of 
  Matilda's death. James became the husband of Jennie 
  May Darnell (1890).

Three of Matilda's childen pre-deceased her.
  Mary Elizabeth Smoot, first wife of T. J. Henegar.**
  Thomas Middleton Smoot, first husband of Mary Francis
  Hammer.
  Virginia Ann Smoot, died at age thirteen, in 1876.

Kinship Connections:
 S. C. Henegar (Samuel Clay Henegar) brother of T. J.  
 Henegar.   
 T. J. Henegar (Thomas Jefferson Hengar), husband of (1.)
 Matilda's daughter, Mary Elizabeth Smoot, and (2.) Susan
