show the relationships of the various purchasers to the
deceased. All lived near the Barren Fork River in Warren
County and these folk were family members, close kin, or
neighbors. The intent here is to demonstrate the value of
an otherwise unexciting document.

* There was another J. M. Smoot, James Madison Smoot,
Matilda's child, who was a minor at the time of
Matilda's death. James became the husband of Jennie
May Darnell (1890).
Three of Matilda's childen pre-deceased her.

Thomas Middleton Smoot, first husband of Mary Francis
Hammer.
Virginia Ann Smoot, died at age thirteen, in 1876.
