The will of Thomas DAVIS of Frederick County, Maryland, planter, dated 16 Feb 1753, proved 17 Mar 1753,
included directive that if wife, Elizabeth, dies before son, James DAVIS reaches his majority, that Matthew
EDWARDS is to take both son James and slave Frank. The will is witnessed by Jeremiah NEAL, Mark EDWARDS and
James EDWARDS. (28.491). The inventory of Thomas DAVIS, executrix, Elizabeth DAVIS, lists Matthew and Mark
EDWARDS as next of kin (58.100), The will of Roswell NEALE of St. Marys County (24 Mar 1751-7 May 1751)
names son, Jeremiah NEALE, but there was also a much earlier Jeremiah NEALE in the records of Talbot
County (1720s).

Newman (p. 124) adds that Marys sureties were John CROMPKIN and James HARRISON, and that in Jun 1755
John SMOOT, Jr. petitioned the court stating that Thomas FLETCHELL had the estate of Edward and Barton
SMOOT in his hands and is now going to move to Carolina, therefore prayed partition of the estate on
behalf of the two orphans.
